About JS Wand Medico-Legal.

Mr Jon Wand B.Sc., M.B.B.S., F.R.C.S, has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon since 1992, working for the NHS at Cheltenham General Hospital and Cirencester Hospital, as well as in private practice at Nuffield Health Cheltenham. JS Wand Medico-Legal was formed to administer the medico-legal aspects of his practice. He has gained extensive experience of general orthopaedics and trauma while working for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust. He has a sub-speciality interest in upper limb trauma and surgery, and specifically in the area of the shoulder and elbow. He continues in clinical practice, both in the NHS and private sector.

Mr Wand began preparing medico-legal reports in 1985. He has attended various courses and updates within this area of interest. Presently he sees claimants in Cheltenham, Cirencester, Harley Street, London, Derby, Birmingham, Durham, Manchester and Portsmouth. Claimants in London and Manchester are usually seen on a Saturday. He has prepared in excess of 19,000 reports. He has experience of giving oral evidence in court, though since the Woolf reforms, less so in recent years. Most of the cases are prepared for personal injury claims, and about 3% medical negligence.

Mr Wand retired from surgical practice in April 2021 and now works exclusively as a medico-legal expert.  Accordingly he ceased to be a Licenced Medical Practitioner with the GMC since December 14th 2021 and is now a Registered Medical Practitioner, since he no longer treats patients.

Mr Wand invites referrals from solicitors requiring a rapid turnover, impartial and comprehensive report. Solicitors should state where they would like their claimants to be examined. In general, appointments are provided within three weeks of instruction, and provided that the medical records have been sourced, the reports are delivered within ten days of examination. Correspondence in relation to a claim is attended to within two weeks of receipt, though more rapidly if urgent. Mr Wand is available for telephone conferencing, and on occasions, attendance in person. He is experienced in drafting joint statements.

Claimants are offered appointments for which positive confirmation in writing is required before the appointment is finalised. A non-attendance fee of £100 is charged after the appointment has been confirmed if the claimant fails to attend.

*COVID UPDATE: I now can see patients at Linton House despite, the COVID crisis, and suitable hygienic measure are in place. I am able to do virtual medico-legal consultations for appropriate cases via WhatsApp, Zoom etc, but face to face consultations are now available.

Mr Wand charges £250 plus VAT per hour. Most personal injury reports are charged between £350 and £800 plus VAT, complex cases proportionately more based on the hourly fee. The fee is largely dependent upon the volume of medical records and X-rays that need to be examined. Telephone conferencing is charged at £250 per hour (to include the time required to review the case records).

Medical negligence cases are generally more complex and involve a more extensive review of the X-rays and records. These cases are charged on an hourly basis, and range between £750 and £1500 plus VAT.

Mr Wand was trading as JW Ortho Ltd until April 6th 2017.  All invoices raised before that date will need to be settled in the name of JW Ortho Ltd and after that date as JS Wand medico-legal.  He will be providing the same high level of service as previously and welcomes new instructions.
